AI promises to profoundly change health care, from clinical practice, to training, to research. Roy Perlis, MD MSc has been appointed as Editor in Chief of JAMA + AI.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into medical research and healthcare is widely regarded as transformative. Previous JAMA editorials have highlighted the rapid progress of AI-powered tools towards clinical implementation, while at the same time emphasizing the critical need for thorough and thoughtful evaluation of these AI-based approaches at every stage of their development.

The JAMA Network is committed to applying the same rigorous standards and principles to AI technologies as it does to any other emerging medical innovation.  Yesterday, the JAMA network announced the launch of JAMA+ AI, described as “a window into the world of AI across the JAMA Network and a first stop for authors and readers seeking the best science and commentary on AI and its application to medicine and public health”.

Roy Perlis, MD, MSc, has been appointed Editor in Chief of JAMA+ AI. Perlis is the Director of the Center for Quantitative Health at Mass General Hospital and the Ronald I. Dozoretz, MD, Endowed Chair at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.   Dr. Roy Perlis is a distinguished researcher and clinician who has made significant contributions to the field of psychiatry and the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare.  He has been at the forefront of integrating AI and machine learning into psychiatric research and clinical practice.

In this video, Editor in Chief Perlis highlights five key things to consider as these technologies develop: combating bias, bridging the translational valley of death, and ensuring that policy and education can keep up as AI becomes a part of medicine.
