On March 27th, three 9-year-olds and three adults were killed at a school in Nashville, Tennessee. This was the deadliest school shooting since May 2022, when 19 children were killed in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
After these events, parents and caregivers are looking for answers on how to talk to their kids about yet another tragedy. In an interview, Dr. Eugene Beresin, Executive Director of the Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Mass General, gives parents some practical guidelines on how to explain these events to children.
The Clay Center also provides a very useful list of resources to help support families to navigate the topics of school shootings and gun violence with children.
